You may see the hottest models in the world supporting the great new diet fad. You may even see a famous fat person turned skinny talking about how the diet fad made it possible. Some of these celebrities may even have diet fads marketed under their names. There is a strong pull inside of us to believe them. After all, they are society's ideal for what we should look like. But what exactly do they know about nutrition and health? How many years have they remained skinny? As a society, we really need to learn how to analyze celebrity endorsements more critically.

Many of the more recent diet crazes have been driven by book sales. To fight back, nutrition experts such as Jo-Ann Heslin and Annette B. Natow have written books of their own urging more caution in the acceptance of fad diets. These 'miracle' weight loss diets often throw out a lot of information that is assumed to be scientific, but in reality is at best speculative information. Many times these diets gain quick acclaim and everybody reads fad diet books instead of legitimate books written by nutritionists and health scientists.

While celebrities are typically the faces of these fad diets, there is usually someone else behind them. When these people can't find celebrity endorsers, they will often try to market their fad diet books themselves. For example, you may have heard of the grapefruit diet, cabbage soup diet, and eggs and fasting diet. The lack of scientific data behind such extreme fad diets makes them dangerous.

The cabbage soup diet is an interesting example. It has yet to be endorsed by any medical establishment. In fact, the American Heart Association says it can be harmful. The people who created the diet say they have witnessed 15lbs of weight loss in a week, without telling that it was likely mainly water weight that was lost. Once you return to drinking and eating the way you did before, your weight will likely go up higher than ever. Worse still, you may suffer from stomach cramps and diarrhea while you're on the diet.

You'll find a variety of other really strange fad diets out their too. One set of fad diets is based on an idea that the types of foods you mix during your meals determines whether you gain or lose weight. Another set of fad diets goes into mind over matter types of ideas. One product even claims to make you dream more so you'll lose more weight while you sleep.

A really common fad diet ploy is to sell you a gimmick food that is supposed to get rid of your hunger when eaten in place of a meal. You've probably seen such weight loss candy bars, teas, and milkshakes in your local grocery store. How many skinny people do you know that are taking part in these types of fad diets? There is no scientific evidence from reputable sources to support these claims. The reality is that they're the works of cunning individuals who know how profitable your desperation can be. Just remember that such fad diets are no substitute for patience and self-discipline.

After years of neglect, I found that my health had suffered. My website, contains the result of my journey back towards health.
